# Who plans and supervises the programme?

Each NeuroRehabilitation programme is planned, led and supervised by **Prof. Dr. Engin Çakar**, a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Algology (Pain Medicine) and Electrodiagnostic Neurology. He is Head of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Memorial Şişli and Memorial Göztepe hospitals.

## A large multidisciplinary team

Prof. Çakar works together with a large multidisciplinary NeuroRehabilitation team. Depending on each patient’s needs, the team may include:

- physicians in physical medicine and rehabilitation
- physiotherapists, including therapists experienced in robotic physiotherapy
- occupational therapists
- speech and language therapists
- NeuroRehabilitation nurses
- psychologists and neuropsychologists
- dietitians and other specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, urology or internal medicine, as needed

## A second-opinion assessment on arrival

Every patient, wherever they come from and whichever centre or department referred them, first undergoes a second-opinion re-evaluation of their specific condition. The aim is to check whether anything has been overlooked and to determine the patient’s specific medical needs before the NeuroRehabilitation programme is planned. This applies to people after a stroke or brain injury as well as after spinal cord injury or with a neurological disease.

## How each patient is assessed

On arrival, Prof. Çakar, as the managing specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and his team arrange for the following specialties to see and evaluate the patient:

- neurology, neurosurgery, internal medicine and cardiology
- orthopaedics, as needed
- wound care and plastic and reconstructive surgery, if there are wounds
- infectious diseases, if there is an infection
- chest diseases (pulmonology), thoracic surgery and ENT (ear, nose and throat), for breathing problems or a tracheostomy

Prof. Çakar works with several hospitals that provide a full range of medical services, so these consultations can be organised under one multidisciplinary management.

## If the condition changes

If a patient’s condition changes during the programme, the hospital has an emergency care team available 24 hours a day and a comprehensive intensive care unit.

**What this means for patients:** medical needs can be identified and addressed as they arise, alongside the NeuroRecovery programme.

## How the programme is run

1. **Assessment:** a detailed medical and functional examination, review of existing reports and imaging, and discussion of the patient’s and family’s goals.
2. **Planning:** individual goals are set and the programme is designed, combining classical physiotherapy and NeuroRehabilitation with technology-supported methods such as robotic physiotherapy where suitable.
3. **Coordination:** team members share findings regularly, and other specialists are involved when needed.
4. **Review:** progress is measured at intervals and the plan is adjusted.

International research supports this kind of organisation: a review in The Lancet describes evidence for NeuroRehabilitation delivered in well-coordinated multidisciplinary stroke units [1], and a Cochrane review of brain injury NeuroRehabilitation concluded that different combinations of interventions are needed to meet different patients’ needs [2].

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Prof. Çakar see the patient himself?** Yes. He carries out the assessment, plans the programme and supervises it throughout.

**Can patients from abroad be assessed?** Yes. In-person examination in Istanbul and second-opinion reviews of existing reports and imaging are available. See [Contact (WhatsApp)](https://drmotiva.com/go/wa?l=en&t=&loc=inline_contact&p=%2Fen%2Fquestions%2Fwho-plans-the-programme%2F).

> **Please note:** NeuroRehabilitation results vary from person to person. What is possible for an individual depends on their condition, and any plan requires an individual medical assessment.
